Google paid Apple $1 Billion for its search bar

Apple received approximately a billion dollars from its rival in 2014 to maintain the search bar on the iPhone. The Oracle attorney who disclosed details of the Google-Apple agreement at last week’s court hearing, said a Google employee questioned during pretrial information said that “at one point in time the revenue share was 34 percent.”

It is unclear if the percentage is the Apple or Google’s cut of the earnings. The assumption is that the 34 percent is in fact Apples.

Google attorney objected to the disclosure:

“That percentage just stated, that should be sealed,” lawyer Robert Van Nest said, according to the transcript. “We are talking hypotheticals here. That’s not a publicly known number.”

The judge presiding over the hearing refused both Apple and Google’s requests to suppress the sensitive information in the court transcripts.

“The specific financial terms of Google’s agreement with Apple are highly sensitive to both Google and Apple,” Google said in its Jan. 20 filing. “Both Apple and Google have always treated this information as extremely confidential.”

While there was no surprise at the both the fact that google pays Apple. The fact that it was a percentage was. It would be more likely that the employee in question was misquoted and that the billion dollars is infact a flat fee. A percentage is unlikely given that there is no possibility of Apple verifying any number Google presents.

The Importance of Installing Windows Updates

Are you one of the many people who ignore the popup about available windows updates? You should not. Windows updates are issued every Tuesday by Microsoft and are available to download shortly afterward. Urgent updates are pushed as soon as they are available. These patches, and the urgent ones even more so are important for several reasons, here are some of them:

autsch1Security

A lot of windows updates are focused around system security. They fix vulnerabilities discovered in windows that hackers or malware can exploit. These fixes are not limited to windows itself, but to the components and software that comes bundled with it, like Internet Explorer. There are also updates pushed to the certificates that authenticate sites on the internet, these too come through windows updates.

Performance

There are also updates that will improve the performance of your computer. In some cases these fix issues that cause slowdowns. Keeping up to date means getting the most out of your system in terms of performance.

Additional Features

In addition, new features and upgrades to existing software by Microsoft will also be pushed through Windows update. Take Microsoft Office for example. Other than regular security and stability updates, new features are pushed through windows updates. A good example is Skype for Business ,which was included in Office as Lync. It has seen some major feature additions through these updates.

Keep your computer and the information on it safe by keeping windows up to date. It may take a bit of your time and a couple of restarts, but the benefits are worth it.

How to Add Tabs to File Explorer in Windows

Even if adding tabs to Windows Explorer has been one of the most popular features that have been requested for, Microsoft still hasn’t delivered.

But you don’t have to wait for them to deliver – you can use the Clover 3 extension which works on all versions of Windows. Yes, even Windows 10 too.

Why tabs, you might ask?

If you need to open another File Explorer window, you don’t have to open a new window altogether. Best part: If you do want a second window, then all you have to do is open a tab and separate the two until you have two separate windows.

autschBut there’s a downsides to using Clover on Windows 10, at least. For starters, Clover 3 will change the File Explorer’s menus. Both the Home and Share options will disappear while the Computer menu option will be added from Windows 8.

Not surprisingly, when you do open File Explorer, you will find a Clover icon instead of a File Explorer icon in the taskbar.

Apart from this, Clover will automatically open a new window which will display the “This PC” view instead of Quick Access which is how it is in Windows 10. No need to panic – Quick Access is still there, of course.

So, if you’re fine with these issues, then Clover 3 can be a great option to get tabs in File Explorer. In order to download it, visit Ejie.me. You will have to extract the ZIP folder and run the .exe file as you would any other any other program made for Windows.

After this, open File Explorer and you should find the ability to use tabs.

How to Use Dropbox’s New Bookmarks Feature

Accessing your bookmarks can be a serious problem especially if you switch between Chrome, Safari and even Internet Explorer. Of course, there are alternatives such as Delicious and Evernote but now there’s a new one.

Yes, you can drag-and-drop bookmarks into the DropBox web app. Or even drop them into File Explorer on your desktop.

Here’s how you use DropBox to create a wealth of bookmarks that you can use in the future. Of course, you can drop URLs anywhere in your Dropbox account but let’s focus on adding them into one folder.

autschFirst, you create a folder in Dropbox called Bookmarks or whatever name you would like. Next, you find the bookmark that you want to drop into the folder created. In order to collect the URL, you’ll have to find an icon to the left of your Chrome or Firefox browser.

In Chrome it is a piece of paper with a folded corner. In Firefox, you will see a globe. Of course, if you’re on a HTTPS connection, then you will see a green lock icon.

Also, it must be pointed out that Microsoft Edge – the new browser for Windows 10 – or even Internet Explorer does not support this Dropbox feature of dragging and dropping links. This could change for Edge in the weeks to come as Microsoft continues to roll out changes.

Once you click that link, then you can drag it into the Dropbox.com browser tab and then drop the link into the Bookmarks folder.

Of course, until now, Dropbox hasn’t released a tool that can help you to export bookmarks from a particular browser but this should work just as well.
